Should a ‘Penny Dreadful’ season 4 renewal happen soon?
There are many wonderful things about Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful.” However, one of the less-than-wonderful things about it is that they only make a small number of episodes a year. There were eight installments in season 1, ten in season 2, and only nine here in season 3. With that, there’s really only a few episodes left until we get to the end of the season.
Is Showtime really going to have a season finale air with us still in the dark about the series’ future? We certainly hope not, and history suggests that they don’t have much of an interest in doing that, either. Last year, the network announced in the middle of June that the show would be coming back for season 3, which meant that fans could breathe a little easier while watching the end of the season.
Since there is one fewer episode this season, we’re at about the same point now that we were last season when the show was brought back … which hopefully means that a renewal will be coming soon.
In terms of live ratings, the show has never necessarily been a dynamo for Showtime, but at the same time its averages for season 3 so far are not to far down from season 2. The same goes for the 18-49 demographic, where it has at least hovered around a 0.2 rating throughout. The show is helped somewhat commercially by the fact that it is a co-production, and to go along with that, it also has going for it significant awards buzz, in particular around Eva Green.
If nothing else, we’d at least like one more season (if not more) to give the journey of Ethan and Vanessa a fitting end.

I am not usually much into shows centering around the supernatural, but in the case of Penny Dreadful, they have added such interesting and intelligent new takes on the old classic horror figures. If my vote counts for anything, please don’t cancel this wonderful show. After all, we haven’t met the Mummy yet, or for that matter, Mr. Hyde. The invisible man? Lots of places to go!

It should not be renewed, entirely because there is really nowhere else for the plot to go. We have established that in the duality of good and evil, there are two Lucifers. Either we discard that and make an situation that breaks the suspension of disbelief and has defeated villains chasing our characters forever — or we end the show. The show has told the story which it wants to tell. It has done so fantastically. But, that story is complete.
