‘Wayward Pines’ season 2, episode 2 review: They’ve got a way with death

Wayward -Two episodes into the second season of “Wayward Pines,” and we are clearly seeing one thing above all else with the story: We’re really saying goodbye to a whole lot of cast members from the first season.

Tonight, we specifically lost the Ben character in one of the most horrific ways ever, as Jason effectively left him to the mercy (or lack thereof) of the Abbies after feeling like he was a threat to him. Therefore, we’ve established even more distance from the first season than we had previously, and we gotta say that we’re not entirely sure that is a good thing. Didn’t the first season work well enough that there is no real need to change it up too much?

Then again, you could say that we really didn’t need a second season at all. Fox managed to have a lot of good stuff going for them the first time around, so there was not really a huge reason for them to continue this beyond their egos feeling like they could catch that lightning in a bottle.

We’re not going to say that the episode was completely devoid of interesting moments, including Megan being an absolutely terrible teacher, and Theo mostly finding a way back in because he’s useful. The problem here is that it is fairly easy to chart out the arc right now of Theo finding his way within Theo’s inner circle because of what he’s capable of, only to eventually take him down from within. If this show ends up being like the science fiction version of “The Night Manager,” is anyone going to be that shocked? Speaking of which, is anyone going to be that shocked if Rebecca ends up being close to Jason?

“Wayward Pines” probably wouldn’t be getting so much flack if it didn’t follow the very-strong first season, but that is what it is. This season can’t go back in time and change the past, but it does feel at times like it’s trying to by distancing itself from what made it great. Grade: C+.
