‘Homeland’ season 6 delayed; renewal for season 7, season 8 coming soon

“Homeland” fans have a chorus of both good and bad news coming in today, starting with a surprise when it comes to the season 6 premiere date: You’re going to be seeing it a little later than usual.

In a conference call with reporters today (per TVLine), Showtime head David Nevins confirmed that for the first time, season 6 is going to air in the winter as opposed to the fall; its premiere should come in early 2017. He also made it clear that it is set to be renewed for two more seasons; it has not been confirmed just yet, but he made it perfectly clear precisely how happy he is with the overall product:

“Homeland is a show that is constantly reinventing itself… since it’s very much about this Intelligence world … More than most, this is a show that has an open-ended expiration date, just because of the subject matter.”

This obviously does open Showtime’s schedule up to something else in the fall to pair with “The Affair.” We’ll have some more official news on that over time. If this renewal goes through, it means that “Homeland” will be up there with both “Dexter” and “Weeds” as two of the network’s long-running shows. It has continued to be successful thanks in part to reinvention, and we’re glad that Nevins has given the team more time if that ensures that season 6 continues to be strong in the way that season 5 was.

For those of you who are extremely curious, Nevins also made it clear that the upcoming “Twin Peaks” revival will likely be here in the second quarter of 2017.
