‘Maya & Marty’ premiere starts with Tom Hanks, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short sketch
We’re not entirely sure what the future of “Maya & Marty” is going to be after one episode on NBC, but there is one thing that we can certainly say for certain after the first sketch: The variety show made the most of its stars’ big Rolodex.
For the opening of the show, Maya Rudolph and Martin Short starred in what may have been a pseudo-spoof of “The Martian” featuring none other than Tom Hanks as the main character. He was an astronaut who kept putting off his return to space by doing some of the most mundane things. The entire thing was entirely silly, but did really enjoy getting a chance to see a big star help launch the show.
As we learned during another part of the opening tonight, Hanks was not the only star who was recruited to take part in the show. Steve Martin made a small cameo as he wanted to be on “the first show,” while Kenan Thompson, who will make regular appearances, also stopped by.
Do we think that this show is going to end up being a big hit this summer? It’s too early to tell, but it basically feels a little like “Saturday Night Live” without as much hype and a celebrity host every week. It’s funny, but is it current enough to really shine? That’s what we have to figure out still over the course of the coming weeks, and we definitely look forward to doing just that. (In other words, what we’re saying is that we’ve at least seen enough so far to know that this is a show still worthy of giving a chance to, even if it is for the most part a work in progress.)
