‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2 midseason finale reaction: Show boss on Daniel Salazar’s fate

The season 2 midseason finale for “Fear the Walking Dead” was certainly excellent by and large, but it did also put us in a paralyzing state of fear over one character in particular. Right when we were starting to really become interested in Daniel Salazar, he’s gone! The character burned down much of Celia’s compound-of-sorts in an effort to destroy her “children,” and at the same time ensure the safety of his daughter and everyone else. It was a sacrifice, but was it a deadly one?

Ultimately, the news we have now is both good and bad. Speaking per Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Dave Erickson certainly makes it seem like he is still alive. However, he also makes it clear that this is someone who’s going to be gone from the show for a while:

“We don’t see Daniel burn, and that’s intentional. I think what’s important at the end of the midseason is that it’s the impact on Ofelia and the rest of the characters that Daniel’s gone. That’s going to spin Ofelia specifically in a new direction for the back half. From my perspective, in terms of the arc of the show, this is not the last we see of Daniel Salazar. He will be done for the season. We won’t be seeing Daniel in the back half, but my hope is we will see the return of Daniel in season 3.”

Hopefully, that’s enough to satisfy many of you Salazar fans out there. If not, at least be happy we’ve still got Victor Strand, arguably the other best character on the show by a wide margin. It’s really not even close between him and anyone else. There are also some other characters whose fate hangs in the balance to a certain extent. After all, we still don’t know whether or not Travis and Chris are going to reunite with the group, and who knows what in the world is going to happen to Nick?
