‘Nashville’ season 5 searching for new home after ABC cancellation

While “Nashville” may be currently canceled at present, clearly the folks over at the studio Lionsgate TV are not taking this lying down just yet.

According to Entertainment Weekly, television group chairman Kevin Beggs wrote in an email to employees that following the show getting axed on ABC, “We’re looking for a new home. We never give up on a great show.” That’s a nice bit of encouragement from your boss if you are a member of your cast / crew, but that is far from a guarantee. While we’ve seen shows like “Longmire” and “Community” get a second life after their original network canceled them, more often than not it proves to be a little bit more difficult.

The real challenge for this particular show’s quest is finding a new home that can also afford it. You have to consider that this is a show with some big names in the cast, music that has to be recorded and made, and some elaborate set pieces. This isn’t a sitcom with a few limited sets, or a series with a small group of actors. While Hulu seems like the obvious contender that they already own the show’s streaming rights and they have a history of picking up canceled shows (“The Mindy Project”), is there any guarantee that they will be willing to do so here? Hardly.

If for whatever reason the show doesn’t come back in its current form, we wouldn’t be shocked if at some point down the road, we end up seeing a network like CMT picking up a spin-off or some alternate version set in the same universe. It seems like the perfect fit stylistically for that network, which could really use some more quality programming aside from country videos and the occasional decent reality show.
