‘Containment’ canceled by The CW after one season; bad move?

We’re going to have a lot of news pertaining to The CW to report on over the course of the coming hours, but we want to get out of the way now the one item that has us arguably the most upset: The lack of a season 2 pickup for “Containment.” The show, which has at least averaged serviceable ratings so far this spring, is being canceled. We hate to say it, but it feels in some ways like the network gave up on the show before it even premiered. Through four episodes, “Containment” has averaged a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is equal to “iZombie” and better than such returning shows as “The Originals,” “The 100,” “Jane the Virgin,” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” It was also an amibtious show that came from a prolific producer at the network in Julie Plec.

So why get rid of it? There are a few easy theories, with one being perception that the show was mostly getting these numbers thanks to airing after “The Flash,” the network’s #1 show. Another is a real lack of real estate. There just are not many shows that the network has room for now, especially when you stop for a moment and consider that they have ordered three new pilots to series, and also are bringing over “Supergirl” from CBS. We don’t know how they have room for all of this as it is.

The major bummer that we have with this cancellation is that it is coming at a time after pilot season is done, so Chris Wood and the cast cannot go out and audition for other shows. Maybe there will be some opportunities that rise over the course of the summer, but it won’t be what it was a few weeks ago.
