NBC orders new comedies featuring ‘Community’ alum Danny Pudi, ‘Gotham’ actor Nicholas D’Agosto
After having a relatively quiet year in the comedy space, NBC seems to be getting back in the game by ordering two comedies that could end up becoming major hits for them. If nothing else, we love the talent and the concepts involved for both of these shows.
“Powerless” – This comedy is set within the DC Comics universe, and stars Vanessa Hudgens as an insurance adjuster who works in the world of helping people out who are involved in superhero-related messes. It’s a really funny concept since we always wonder how the wreckage of Superman and company is eventually fixed. here’s what else we lost here: The cast. You’ve got “Community” alum Danny Pudi, and then also “Firefly” / “Con Man” star Alan Tudyk. These are two people we’d want to see in just about any comic-book show.
“Trial & Error” – This one sounds equally excellent, as Nicholas D’Agosto (“Gotham”) is going to star as a sharp New York City attorney who is brought to a small Southern town to help defend a professor (John Lithgow) accused of killing his wife. That certainly sounds dark, but hey there must be humor here somewhere since it has Lithgow in it alongside Sherri Shepherd and former “Glee” star Jayma Mays.
One of the biggest reasons we need these two shows to win right now is because other than maybe “black-ish” and “The Carmichael Show,” there have not exactly been many winning comedies on the air over the past year or two other than established hits / ones that air on cable or streaming outlets. The big issue here is mostly if they are going to deliver a big audience, given that this is something many shows struggle with.
