NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Alisan Porter, Adam Wakefield, Owen Danoff, top 11 perform

Tonight, “The Voice” is back with another performance show, and this time, it is the top 11 taking the stage! We’re going to be updating this article throughout the night with some more on the performances, and whether or not some underdogs brought it or some favorites fell apart under the pressure.

Shalyah Fearing – Team Adam – The Climb by Miley Cyrus. We really wish Shalyah chose something different. Her voice is incredible, but other than a few notes at the end, there really wasn’t much to distinguish this from any other version.

Daniel Passino – Team Pharrell – Did Daniel do wonders with this timeless song? We thought for the most part it was the best performance he’s given, except at the tail end here when he let out a high note that we didn’t quite need to hear.

Paxton Ingram – Team Blake – Break Every Chain by Tasha Cobbs. How was Paxton during this particular transition? The problem with gospel at this point, especially when it’s out of left field, is that it feels like a ploy for votes. We did get that Paxton had some passion and fire in him this week, but his tuning was still all over the place.

Owen Danoff – Team Adam – Fire and Rain by James Taylor. Did Owen bring some fire to the competition? It was more like soft, quiet vulnerability. We don’t think that Owen is the sort of performer who everyone out there is going to love, but we do think that he did a lot right here in terms of channeling the meaning.

Mary Sarah – Team Blake – Johnny and June by Heidi Newfield. How much passion did Mary bring to this performance? We were really hoping that this was going to be more than it was. Instead, it was a pretty expected country performance, solid enough to perform well on iTunes but that’s about it.

Alisan Porter – Team Christina – Stay With Me Baby by Lorraine Ellison. It’s a powerful song, but did this become a memorable performance? The problem is that we find it lyrically a somewhat off-putting song right now, and this may be a rare misstep for someone who’s been amazing all season long. She did sing the heck out of it (as always), so we’ll see what happens with iTunes and the results tomorrow.

Bryan Bautista – Team Christina – Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars. Was this amazing, just the way it was? It actually was a little strange, like Bryan tried to throw too much at this while the arrangement also lagged at a strange pace. We would’ve liked to see a version that picked up a little more.

Adam Wakefield – Team Blake – Lights by Journey. Did Adam light up the show? We did think that this was a really worthy performance of the song by the band, and he did a good job giving it a separate identity from what the band does. Adam is consistently solid, and with Blake as his coach, we think he could really play spoiler this season.

Nick Hagelin – Team Christina – Your Body is a Wonderland by John Mayer. Was this a performance worthy of wonder? We don’t really like the song choice, but we do think that he hit the song with a ton of gusto, and did just about everything he could to make it special.

Hannah Huston – Team Pharrell – How much did we love Hannah this week? Enough for her to be the best of the night. We hope someone watching this performance makes a note of this as further evidence that you don’t always need big notes or huge staging to give a wonderful performance. You just need to connect to the song.

Laith Al-Saadi – Team Adam – Make it Rain by Ed Sheeran. How did Laith’s version compare to some others? Let’s start with this: Laith was great. We do hope that we get to see some other current performances from him, since the biggest thing this was lacking was just creativity. We’ve heard it so much!
