NBC’s ‘The Voice’ spoilers: What Owen Danoff, Shalyah Fearing, Mary Sarah, top 12 will sing

VoiceTonight, the top 12 are performing on “The Voice,” and unlike the recently-departed “American Idol,” this is not a show that does themes. Instead, this is a show that features artists, with the help of their coaches, figuring out precisely the right songs for them to do on the night that will sell on iTunes and win America over.

Today, we’ve got some of those songs for you to anticipate in advance. As per usual, we’re adding some of our own thoughts, and we’ll be back later tonight with our full take on the actual performances themselves. These choices were first compiled by Mjsbigblog.

Daniel Passino – Team Pharrell – Human Nature by Michael Jackson – It’s a classic song, and one that many people have a close attachment to. Will it appeal to the modern crowd? We’re not sure.

Emily Keener – Team Pharrell – Lilac Wine by Jeff Buckley – It’s not exactly the most familiar song for modern audiences, but Emily’s a throwback. We’ll see what happens.

Hannah Huston – Team Pharrell – Something’s Got a Hold on Me by Christina Aguilera – Clever by Hannah and Pharrell here! It’ll also help her that she she should be able to tackle the song, which isn’t exactly easy.

Laith Al-Saadi – Team Adam – Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King – Laith is the darkhorse in this competition. We’re not sure this will be an iTunes monster, but he’ll be sticking around for a while.

Owen Danoff – Team Adam – 7 Years by Lukas Graham – Amazing choice. Owen’s going to sell a ton of singles with this. It’s one of the hottest songs out there right now, and it’s incredibly meaningful lyrically.

Shalyah Fearing – Team Adam – Up to the Mountain by Patti Griffin – Excellent song for Shalyah. It’s familiar, but it’s not something as overdone as “Listen.”

Adam Wakefield – Team Blake – Soulshine by Adam Wakefield – Wait, he’s getting to do his own song? How often does that happen?! It’s actually a song that he does with his band The Copperheads. (Update: As someone noted on Twitter, it’s a cover of the Allman Brothers song that he has performed and covered in the past.)

Mary Sarah – Team Blake – So Small by Carrie Underwood – It appeals to the country base, and it’s super-familiar. Why wouldn’t this work?

Paxton Ingram – Team Blake – Hands to Myself by Selena Gomez – We don’t get this one at all. It’s not a vocally-challenging song, and we don’t really know what he can do with it.

Alisan Porter – Team Christina – Stone Cold by Demi Lovato – Demi’s voice is constantly underrated, so this song will give the current frontrunner a lot to do.

Bryan Bautista – Team Christina – Kiss From a Rose by Seal – It’s a good song, but is it a little dated and/or hokey for Bryan? We think there were probably better choices for him out there.

Nick Hagelin – Team Christina – Mine Would be You by Blake Shelton – Hey, it’s another creative move to have an artist sing a coach’s song. Given that Nick’s not strictly a country singer, this should be interesting.
