‘Dancing with the Stars 22’ week 4: What Antonio Brown, Kim Fields will perform on Disney night
Monday night’s new episode of “Dancing with the Stars” is bringing back Disney night, which does have a reputation for being a lot of fun. First and foremost it has some of that Disney magic going for it, and then also some corporate synergy that lets ABC look forward to doing this time and time again. Many of these Stars either grew up on these songs or know that their children like them, so there’s that added pressure and attachment to try to do the best performance possible.
For now, let’s just talk about the songs chosen and see if we think it’s a good match up for the stars. We’re not sure how much say any of the teams had in making these choices, since a lot of the good songs are already taken.
Antonio Brown and Sharna Burgess — Jazz – “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin. This will be a lot of fun, and while we’re not sure how much of it will be a conscious tribute to the amazing Robin Williams, it will be forever in our heart … much in the same way that anything featuring Robin would be.
Doug Flutie and Karina Smirnoff — Jazz – “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins. Doug, like the “Mary Poppins” movie, seems to have that sort of timeless appeal to him. He should connect well with the song, and bring a lot of classic charm to the number.
Ginger Zee and Val Chmerkovskiy — Foxtrot – “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast. This is one of those Disney songs we had to actually go back and re-listen to, since the only ones from the movie we have a recollection of are the title song and “Be Our Guest.” We do still think Ginger will do something great with this even if we’re not as familiar with the song.
Jodie Sweetin and Keo Motsepe — Cha Cha – “Try Everything” from Zootopia. Jodie’s got a good news / bad news sort of situation going on here. The obvious reason for her to be happy with this choice is because “Zootopia” has been a runaway hit for Disney this spring, and it’s probably what many kids are talking about at school. Yet, how many adults are familiar with it at this point?
Kim Fields and Sasha Farber — Quickstep – “I Wan’na Be Like You” from The Jungle Book. Love this song. It’s fun, goofy, and with a live-action “Jungle Book” coming to theaters soon, it’s also the perfect time to bring this choice to the ballroom.
Marla Maples and Tony Dovolani — Waltz – “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. She may have a better chance of having a moment in this episode than every other Star, with one exception we’ll mention later. This is a super-iconic song, and the style seems completely right for Marla to cater to her strengths.
Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd — Samba – “Trashin’ the Camp” from Tarzan. Like “Belle,” we don’t remember the song. This could be a tough week for Nyle in general, given that he is coming off one of his strongest weeks in the competition and that’s usually when the judging is the harshest.
Paige VanZant and Mark Ballas — Quickstep – “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story. Given that Mark is from our vantage point the show’s best choreography, hopefully he will find a way to make a quickstep from this song, which seems a little too slowly-paced for it.
Von Miller and Witney Carson — Viennese Waltz – “A Dream is a Wish” from Cinderella. This is a song from the live-action movie, which we haven’t seen. This could be a challenge for Von in particular, since this dance relies less on his energy and charisma and more on his patience and lyricism.
Wanya Morris and Lindsay Arnold — Samba – “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. This is the one dance that could top Marla’s, since we’re talking about one of the biggest songs in Disney history. Our one concern? We’re not sure why this is samba and not jazz, contemporary, or some other style that makes more sense.
