‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Russell Crowe, Margo Price hype up ‘comedy show’ (video)

SNL -This weekend’s new episode of “Saturday Night Live” is certainly still somewhat of a mystery to us. First of all, you’ve got a host in Russell Crowe who strangely has never hosted before, and from there you’ve also got a musical guest in Margo Price who, while great, is not someone the majority of America has heard of. She’s more of an underground country artist who is getting a big chance to leap into the spotlight on this show.

As for the latest promo featuring the two, it’s at least charismatic, though not entirely funny. Then again, few of these promos really are. What we at least get from this is mostly that Crowe is willing to be a little bit goofy, which is good since the goofiness bar was set high last week with Peter Dinklage.

Here’s the big thing we’re concerned about here: Relevant references. Crowe is still a working actor and then some, but many of his most-famous movies are more than a decade old at this point. Is anyone really buzzing to see a “Gladiator” reference in 2016? We’re not entirely sure, even if we do love the movie.

It’s certainly possible that this show could become the biggest surprise of the season, and we’re clamoring to see Crowe back again in the famous studio sooner rather than later. Of course, at the same time we also think that it is definitely possible that we forget that this show ever happened a month or two from now and we’re focusing on better things. This is definitely in the “to be determined” camp if a show ever was.
