‘The X-Files’ season 10 leaves rather large cliffhanger for future episodes

X Files -You’ve waited for so many years now to see more of “The X-Files” on the air, and now it is starting to look as though creator Chris Carter wants more opportunities to expand the universe now that the show is back. At one point, we figured that the series would be going the “Heroes: Reborn” route of giving you something that is relatively self-contained, but it is turning out to not be the case.

While speaking about the six-episode tenth season to the press at TCA, Carter made it clear (per Entertainment Weekly) that there is a cliffhanger at the end of the final episode that leaves it open for more in the future. If the ratings are good enough, he personally would love to come back and do more. He also made it clear he would be open to doing a third feature film based on the franchise, provided that it goes in a different direction than “I Want to Believe,” which ended up being largely dismissed as a disappointment:

“If there is a third movie it’s got to be a gigantic movie … It would have to be a big-budget movie; that’s what X-Files fans want. We tried to do a very small movie about faith the second time out. And it was released in the middle of summer tentpole movies. It was a misstep in that way. I think [a third movie] has to be more like the first movie.”

We do think the show will return to huge numbers following the NFC Championship Game on January 24, and the real test will come after that. Is demand for the revival high among casual viewers, or just people online? That will be the real litmus test.
