TV Underdogs: Should ‘Girl Meets World’ give Zay a little more screen time?

Girl Meets Rah-Rah -When “Girl Meets World” decided that they wanted to give the Lucas character a new foil, someone who understood him and someone who had some sort of past with him in Texas, they went in a fun direction with Amir Mitchell-Townes as Zay Babineaux. He’s an extremely funny character, someone who fires off some great one-liners, and we occasionally have seen some great sideplots with him as well. (The saga of Vanessa in “Girl Meets Texas” was particularly entertaining.)

Given that Zay brought us some gold almost every time we saw him during season 2, isn’t there a case to be made for giving him more to do moving forward in our daily TV Underdogs series? We’d say so, especially since Mitchell-Townes is proving to have every bit the comic timing of his dad DJ Jazzy Jeff (from “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”).

Why he’s an underdog – Zay is the classic case of a character getting more and more love because of fan reaction. He was brought in as a recurring player, someone to test out as a longtime friends of Lucas’ who could bond with Riley, Maya, and Farkle. He’s since done that, and this of course has many hoping for so much more of him in the third season. As the cast moves to another school in season 3, they will need to expand the cast somewhat; giving Zay more to do would be an easy way to just that.

Why we haven’t seen more of him – One easy reason is because he is still a fairly new character, and for this season there may have been some hesitancy to use him too much, not knowing for sure what viewer reaction would be. Also, there are four main characters still in Riley, Maya, Lucas, and Farkle who receive the majority of the air time, and once you get through them and also Cory / Topanga / Auggie, there often isn’t much time left.

Ways to give him more air time – Given that “Girl Meets World” makes so many episodes (there were 30 in season 2), why not have an episode or two that revolve much more around the Lucas – Zay friendship? You could see Riley trying to help the two friends resolve a conflict, or how they react to some of the new clubs or organizations that are there in school. Also, there’s always the potential to give him a new love interest, who could then also interact with not only him, but also Riley and the rest of the gang. Ultimately, we just want more Zay! Any way in which this happens is something that we’re going to be happy about.
