Ratings: ‘Galavant’ falls further, ‘Madam Secretary’ and ‘The Good Wife’ slip versus Golden Globes

Galavant -Oh, the power of airing after NFL broadcasts. While the final week of the football season paid some big dividends last week for CBS, this time around it helped out Fox in their continued attempt to launch some new shows. We suppose that they didn’t know the schedule in advance, since otherwise we don’t know why they would have launched “Bordertown” and “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life” last week versus this week, since they could have had a much larger launch.

Of course, there was one other big factor in the ratings Sunday: The 2016 Golden Globes, which drew an impressive 4.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with Ricky Gervais as the host.

The winners – It’s all about Fox here. “The Simpsons” got a strong 2.8 rating thanks to football, and in turn “Cooper Barrett” and “Bordertown” (1.4) each improved by dramatic measures since their premieres. Strangely, “Family Guy” actually did not benefit at all with a 1.6, but Fox probably doesn’t care that much about that.

The losers – The biggest sad story here is “Galavant,” who saw its ratings fall all the way to a 0.6 rating, the sort of anemic number that tends to get shows immediately pulled off the air. This is the show’s likely nail in the coffin, and at this point our hope is mostly that we get to see the rest of the season at its regularly-scheduled timeslot. We’re not sure why in the world so many devoted fans who bail on watching it live; we suppose that Ricky Gervais (who ironically has appeared on the show in the past) was enough to make viewers change the channel.

Also, both “Madam Secretary” and “The Good Wife” dropped down to a 1.0 rating for their winter premieres, which makes us question further why CBS didn’t either bring these shows back last week or wait a week. Either way, they probably would have made a smarter decision.
