2016 Golden Globes: Rachel Bloom, ‘Narcos,’ Eva Green ‘American Horror Story’ among surprises
Thursday morning brought us the Golden Globe nominations, and for the most part it was a surprising assembly of people this year. We’ve got some repeat nominees, a whole lot of newbies, and even a few shows that many may not have heard about before.
In looking at the full list of nominees, these are some of the things that we are the most surprised about:
Rachel Bloom – We’re happy for the “Crazy Ex Girlfriend” star, but even with Gina Rodriguez’s nod last year we’re used to The CW being ignored.
Eva Green – Finally, a little bit of love for her “Penny Dreadful” performance!
All the “Outlander” love – It’s certainly deserving, but after snubs all across the board with the SAG Awards and the Emmys we entered the morning worried.
“American Horror Story” – This season is not good. Think of this, yet again, as a nomination loophole where it gets in because voters have heard of it.
“Mozart in the Jungle” – The Amazon comedy was a surprising but welcome entry.
“Casual” – You can say the same thing about Hulu’s new series.
“Narcos” – We figured that the Netflix drama about drug kingpins had a chance, but we didn’t know to what extent.
“Master of None” – It would’ve been nice to see it get a series nod, but one for Aziz Ansari will have to do for now.
As we noted earlier, we cannot quibble too much with the overall nominations. Sure, there are some snubs, but other than the Critics’ Choice Awards, we’d say that the Hollywood Foreign Press does the finest job out of anyone in recognizing real talent from a variety of different shows, old and new.
