‘Scream Queens’ finale: Abigail Breslin already lines up next gig in ‘Dirty Dancing’
TV loves to do remakes, right? We’re seeing it with shows, and we are certainly seeing it now with TV movies.
The latest bit of chatter comes courtesy of ABC, who is now eyeing a revival of “Dirty Dancing” for a three-hour movie event featuring Abigail Breslin in the lead role of Frances Houseman. The child star, famous for “Little Miss Sunshine,” got a chance to show a very new side on “Scream Queens” this season as Chanel No. 5. If this project comes to fruition, she will have lined up some more work for her, which is great given that the future of “Scream Queens” itself seems to be very much in limbo.
Now, there is of course a question as to whether or not we need more “Dirty Dancing,” just as there are questions as to whether or not we need many of the remakes that are being thrown out there at the moment. TV has become obsessed with bringing back old properties, and it is a somewhat-unusual practice when you consider that for the most part, few of them are drawing enormous ratings. For every “The Wiz Live!” there is also a reboot of “Charlie’s Angles” or a “Minority Report” adaptation that tanks. If you look at most of the biggest TV hits (“Empire,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Scandal”), they are all original properties in one way or another.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see what else ABC decides to do with this project. Breslin is talented, and that is the one bit of hope that we’ll give this as a whole.
