Ratings Progress Report: Should ‘Supergirl’ fly over to The CW?
At present we are three episodes into the run of “Supergirl” on CBS, and we have a hard time imagining that this is where the network expected it to be at this point. Despite all the hype, the budget, and the promotion, the show fell down to a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic for this past new episode. That is lower than the series premiere of “The Flash” on The CW (1.9), and it also happens to be only two-tenths above what the Grant Gustin series drew Tuesday night.
Is the show in any huge danger right now? No, but that is assuming that it holds on to the entirety of the rating it has right now. Can the show prove itself to be worth all of the hype, and the massive price tag that likely comes along with it? That is something we’re going to figure out here in the latest edition of our Ratings Progress Report.
The good news – If the show gets at least close to a 2.0 in the 18-49 demographic, it has to be considered at least a moderate success, and enough for CBS to renew it. You have to remember that even a 1.7 is better than “Limitless,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Code Black,” recent episodes of “Criminal Minds,” “Elementary,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Blue Bloods,” “Madam Secretary,” “CSI: Cyber,” and “The Good Wife.” Really, the only scripted shows that are doing better are the flagship “NCIS” and “Scorpion.” Therefore, its odds are still high. It’s a little early to determine all of the DVR numbers, but if it turns out that people are watching “The Voice” live and recording this, it could allow it at least a little bit more time on the air.
The bad news – When you’ve lost close to half of your premiere rating in two weeks, it’s trouble. It’s even more troublesome when you consider the mixed reviews as of late. if the show loses around the same percentage again over the rest of the season, it’s sure to be canceled or at least moved to The CW … but is that really a bad thing?
We’ve said this almost from the beginning, but we feel like this show ending up on The CW could be one of the best things to happen to it. This would allow the network a chance to give it a little more room to grow and improve without some of the pressure. That is something that will probably continue to be there so long as it is at CBS. Plus, more “Arrow” and “The Flash” crossovers! What’s not to like there?
