‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 spoilers: Could there be a relationship between Mulan, Merida?

Ever since it was first revealed that “Once Upon a Time” was going to pursue an LGBT romance this season with Mulan, there was of course one response to that: Who would it be with? There has not been anything said just yet about Sarah Bolger returning as Aurora, and even if she did, she is both married and has a child. We haven’t seen any evidence that she is interested in that way.

Thanks to this, there have really been two candidates that fans have considered for Jamie Chung’s character: Merida and Red, with the emphasis more on the former mostly because we have not seen anything of Red over the years to make us think that she has an interest in both men and women.

However, some new comments from Amy Manson, who plays the “Brave” character, to Entertainment Weekly may throw a wrench into the idea that Merida and Bravo are getting together. Here is what she said about whether or not the two characters, who as it turns out already have some history, could be romantic:

“Absolutely not. I was actually on Instagram the other day and there were some of the fans discussing that. It’s better just to say what I know about that. But there’s talk within the episode of a past relationship, like you said, but not for my character.”

Does this mean for sure that Mulan’s mystery love interest is Red? It is probably easy to draw that conclusion, but we are hesitant to say that with 100% certainty since there are so many different variables at are at stake with this show. It’s possible that the romance could come later this season, and everyone is assuming that the upcoming Mulan / Red / Merida episode this fall is going to introduce that plotline.
