‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 2, episode 4 review: Simmons’ choice; is Andrew in peril?

May -At the beginning on Tuesday night’s new episode of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD,” it was certainly clear that Agent Melinda May had made her choice in sticking with SHIELD over Andrew. Technically, he left her, but for reasons related to her more so than anything to do with the group … but she could have fought for him more than she ultimately did.

By the end of the episode, though, it was clear that May was going to need to work in a different sort of way to be there for Andrew: By protecting him from Ward. At the end of a complicated (and pretty thrilling) exchange that involved Lance Hunter going in too deep in order to stop the newly-appointed Hydra leader, the organization was quick to plan an attack against Andrew. This was set up perfectly by what we saw on the show in recent weeks, and it gives May that further drive (not that she really needed much of one). For the record, we do think that Andrew makes it out of this episode okay. Are you really going to get rid Blair Underwood so quickly?

We’re surprised by how much of a slow-burn the show is giving Lash at the moment, but we’re glad. The guy is such a terrifying, crazy villain that giving us some time before the final showdown is nice. Also, this gives us more of an opportunity to see what his endgame is, and how he wants to go about some of his plans.

After spending most of the episode seeing the great Inhuman hunt continue between Coulson and Rosalind, we ended with another big surprise: Simmons finally preparing to tell the story of what happened to her while she is away. Maybe this will help explain why, to quote a phrase from “Lost,” she has to go back… Anyway, this was a nice ending to what was an eventful episode. Grade: B.
