‘The Good Wife’ season 7 premiere review: Alicia meets Lucca Quinn

“The Good Wife” season 7 had a problem from the very beginning: How do make Alicia Florrick starting over once again into a compelling story? Regardless of whether or not you may think so, this is far from the first time that we had seen the show touch on this subject. Remember when Lockhart Gardner was over for her years ago? This was somewhat similar, with her working out of a home office and having to steer clear of working with Louis Canning at all costs.

Alicia did find someone new to rely on this season in Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), a woman working in bond court who showed herself to be quite the teacher … even if in almost any other situation the roles would be reversed. It was nice to see her in a position that was somewhat humbling like this. We all know already that Alicia is very smart and can learn things quickly, and that is why she needs a new challenge.

Oh, and we don’t consider being there for another Peter campaign a challenge. He is desperate to build traction in Iowa in hopes of coming the next Vice-President of the United States, and that is why Margo Martindale is there in order to help him out! Her character Ruth showed herself to be formidable in the early going, and did not do a good job of making many friends in the process.

The case-of-the-week story was fairly compelling, but above all, we liked the premiere for the little moments like Lucca telling Alicia that she voted for her to win State’s Attorney … not that it mattered much. It was a story that embraced a new beginning, and while inspiring at times, was still grounded in the reality that Robert and Michelle King excel at creating. Grade: B+.
