‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5, episode 2 review: ‘The Price’ for Regina, Emma; plus, Excalibur!

The Price -Could Regina really be a savior on “Once Upon a Time“?

Going into the new episode of the ABC series on Sunday night, this was the primary question that many people had when it comes to the character. There has never been a role-reversal on the series quite like this one, which threw her into a part that she was not entirely comfortable with. She had to get accustomed to doing everything in Camelot, whether it be trying to dance or adapt to having people respect her. The problem was right in the middle of a Royal ball in the city, she ended up learning the hard way that her past can come back to bite her in a big way.

Unfortunately, an injury from Robin Hood led to the first big sacrifice of “The Price,” a move that in turn led to the transformation of Emma into the Dark Swan. This stuff is all fascinating, but we imagine that going into this, we wanted to see more of the present than of the past. We had a little bit of that thanks to some other trouble for Robin in the present, which led to Regina and many of her new-found friends coming together in order to save her.

One other story that we are unsure about at the moment? The whole Henry romance. We know that we want to see the kid as a part of the story somehow, but at the moment it just feels tacked-on and not exactly necessary to everything else that is going on.

At the end of the episode, “The Price” as a title actually came back into play as one of the more intriguing elements of the story: A consequence for Emma trying to take Excalibur in the present. What exactly does this mean? We know that it and the Dark One dagger are one in the same, and could be the key to absolute power. This is the stuff that fascinates us the most! As much as we enjoy many individual elements at the moment, the story as a whole is somewhat disjointed.
