‘Downton Abbey’ season 6, episode 2 preview: The story for Laura Carmichael’s Edith
The sixth season of “Downton Abbey” started off in Great Britain this past weekend, and within that episode we saw a wide array of major stories unfold, we feel like the best is still to come for Lady Edith. Laura Carmichael’s character is actively considering just what her future is going to hold, and this will be a part of her story on Sunday night’s new episode.
As you saw with the story of Robert in the premiere, one of the major themes of the show right now is change. He now is starting to realize that this particular way of life cannot go on forever, and this is something that Edith has been aware of for a while now. This is why she has focused in on doing some newspaper work as of late, and we’re going to continue to see her doing that as she ponders more of a city life away from Downton.
Here is the struggle that the show runs into with this for the most part: Trying to find a way to balance city Edith and Downton Edith. The issue here is that you want to have someone of Carmichael’s caliber on the show as much as you possibly can, since it would be so much more boring without her around as a pretty permanent part of the ensemble.
In the end, we feel like this is just a balancing act that they will have to execute, and one thing that the series can always fall back on here is their intention to eventually have Edith’s endgame somewhere away from the Abbey. At that point, she will not be appearing onscreen anymore.
