‘Doctor Who’ season 9 spoilers: The Jenna Coleman ‘leaving’ rumors begin again
Stop us when this one sounds familiar: It is looking as thought Jenna Coleman is going to be leaving “Doctor Who” at the end of the season.
This is a report that first circulated heavily last year, with it eventually being revealed that there were at one point plans for the woman behind Clara Oswald to make her final appearance in the Christmas Special; however, she later opted to return, and the show continued ahead with season 9 featuring her as a Companion to The Doctor (Peter Capaldi).
What’s different now? A report from the Mirror in the UK that Coleman is set to depart at the end of the season to work on an ITV miniseries about Queen Victoria. If this turns out to be the case, we wouldn’t be too surprised. Companions on this show don’t have a lengthy shelf life, and if she remains in this role until the Christmas Special this year, she will have been the longest-tenured Companion in terms of episode count in history, passing Karen Gillan as Amy Pond.
If this does turn out to be the end for Jenna, we hope that Capaldi will stick around for at least one more season. We prefer it when you have one companion or one Doctor sticking around, that way it is a little less of a harsh transition and one person can stick around to support the other.
The new season of “Doctor Who” will premiere this Saturday, and while we would be surprised to see Coleman confirm her exit sooner rather than later, anything is possible and it may be up to what her and the show’s executive producers want to do.
