Emmys 2015: Should ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ ‘Top Chef,’ ‘The Amazing Race’ win reality competition?
We have a tradition here at CarterMatt of consistently railing on the Emmys for their terrible selections in the Outstanding Reality Competition Series category, but we will provide one little thing in defense of them this year: Where are the other nominees? Other than “The Quest” or “King of the Nerds” (which we loved by very few people watched), this is not a great time for the genre. Many shows, as we alluded to, are quickly canceled, and a number of others are simply terrible.
All of the shows nominated this year are high quality, but the only downside to many of them is that they’ve been nominated so many times that it’s hard to get on a megaphone and tout their various achievements to the world. Still, we’re going to pick our way through them as a part of our annual Emmy preview series.
The nominees
The Amazing Race (CBS)
Dancing with the Stars (ABC)
Project Runway (Lifetime)
So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)
Top Chef (Bravo)
The Voice (NBC)
What should win – If you look back at this past year, we feel like this was really the comeback of “Dancing with the Stars.” There was a time when it looked like ABC’s dance competition was starting to show its age and look like it was on its way to the grave, but the past two seasons managed to bring some more life to it thanks to a few new twists, some great casting (if you’re not going to get big celebrities, at least get creative), and also all of the good stuff they already were bringing to the table (like Tom Bergeron, the best host in the business).
What will win – If this was for “The Amazing Race 25” only, there’s no doubt that we’d be fine with this winning and we’d probably even argue for it. even with low ratings, it was the best season for the show in years. Unfortunately, it followed that up with the ho-hum blind-date season that, while it did produce a few good moments here and there, took away a lot of the variety that we really liked about the show in the first place. Still, the Emmys love “The Amazing Race,” and it, “Top Chef,” and “The Voice” are the only real candidates. They’re the only ones that have actually won this award in the category’s history.
