2015 Emmys: Should Tituss Burgess, Adam Driver, or Andre Braugher win Supporting Actor honors?
For anyone who is looking for an Emmy category with a decent mix of new blood and familiar faces, the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series field has it. We’ve got a number of multiple-time nominees in this category, but we’ve also got the presence of Tituss Burgess for the first time in the category, and some much-deserved recognition for Keegan-Michael Key at the same time.
So could one of the these two guys pull an upset and surprise the rest of the field? Given that there is no clear favorite for this category, we’re willing to say at the moment that it is possible.
The nominees
Andre Braugher, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (Fox)
Tituss Burgess, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Netflix)
Ty Burrell, “Modern Family” (ABC)
Adam Driver, “Girls” (HBO)
Tony Hale, “Veep” (HBO)
Keegan-Michael Key, “Key & Peele” (Comedy Central)
Who should win – It’s a little strange to see Key in the Supporting rather than lead category, but either way we’d be happy with a win by him. For now, though, our #1 preference is Burgess just because without Titus on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” what is this show? The character’s narcissism is offset somewhat by his whimsy, and he’s one of the best new additions to the comedy genre of the past year. We’re also very fond of Braugher, who has been nominated nine times over the course of career with two wins.
Who will win – It’s another tough race here. Driver has some of the star power now with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” coming out, but we’d say that Hale, Burrell, and Braugher are the likely favorites just for being familiar faces in the category. We’re giving the edge slightly to Braugher, mostly because of his overall excellence and the fact that his “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-star Andy Samberg is hosting. Even unconsciously, maybe this will be on the mind of voters.
