‘Ray Donovan,’ ‘Masters of Sex’ renewed for season 4

Showtime continues to make a commitment to their original programming, and are wasting no time once again renewing two of their summer shows.

Today at TCA, the network confirmed that both “Ray Donovan” and “Masters of Sex,” following another successful run of episodes and solid ratings, have been officially confirmed for a fourth season. Each will begin airing new episodes at some point next summer, and it does not appear as though either is showing any signs of slowing down just yet.

With that being said, it does feel fairly easy to figure out right now that of the two series, “Ray Donovan” may have a little more of a long-term shelf life. Given that “Masters of Sex” is actually based more off of real events, there is a more finite nature to its story than something like the Liev Schreiber series, which is ultimately rather open-ended and could go on for as long as the stars involved want it to.

Right now, Showtime has established a reasonable amount of consistency across the board. “Shameless,” “Homeland,” “Penny Dreadful,” and “The Affair” at present are all among their stable of successful hour-long shows, and we don’t get any evidence that any of them is ending in the near future. The network is also in the process of bringing back “Twin Peaks” after it ran for some time on broadcast TV. This is a project that is long in the making, and we will have some other discussion on the subject of that a little later in the day.
