‘The Exes’ canceled by TV Land, per star Kristen Johnston

TV Land -

Sad news for anyone out there who loved “The Exes“; TV Land has officially cut ties on the comedy. The news was confirmed late Monday night in a post by series star Kristen Johnston (see below).

Are we particularly surprised about this? Not entirely, and it really does not have anything to do with the show’s ratings. TV Land has recently underwent a big change in their branding, and seems to be intent on creating either more single-camera fare or appealing to a younger demographic with their series. “Younger” may be a direction (ironic, given the name) of where they are wanting to go. They may not be so much in the business of getting classic TV stars to appear in new multi-camera sitcoms anymore.

The loss of “The Exes” is one that we find especially a bummer, mostly because you have a series here that included Donald Faison (“Scrubs”) as well as Kristen having a sort of “3rd Rock from the Sun” reunion with Wayne Knight, who has a great talent for being invovled in really fun sitcoms. Unfortunately, this is just one of those situations where it is what it is. This is not the sort of show that will likely be sold anywhere else; it really caters well to the TV Land audience, or what at least this audience used to be before all of the changes.

As Johnston said, there will be six more episodes of the series, and they start airing on Wednesday. In other news, you better be prepared to savor every moment the rest of the way.
