‘Empire’ season 2 spoilers: Is there a spin-off series already in the works?
Even though “Empire” is just starting their second season, there is one thing already clear: Fox is ready to start milking this series for just about everything that it is worth.
Today at the TCA summer press tour, show executive producer Lee Daniels confirmed that there are at least plans in the works to produce some sort of spin-off project that will focus on the character of Cookie when she was younger. This is a character with such a robust past, and given how amazing she is in the present-day, we do want to see where she comes from. Daniels commented that he would love to see her mother, her sisters, and to make this some sort of prequel project.
Do we like this particular idea? Sure, but our major concern at the moment is strictly that we are so early in “Empire’s” run on TV right now. Only one season of the show has aired! We are still waiting to figure out whether or not this is a flash-in-the-pan story, or something with significant staying power. There have only been twelve episodes of the show that have aired so far.
While we do have these concerns, a thing to remember here is that if there is some sort of Cookie prequel project, it probably would not be on the air until the 2016-17 season. That means that there is so much more time in order to determine whether or not “Empire” needs this. We had similar concerns about “Arrow” getting a spin-off so early in season 2, but “The Flash” has proven to be worth it.
