‘Descendants’ draws huge ratings for Disney Channel; sequel likely on the way
We don’t imagine that it is going to take the Disney Channel much time at all to figure out whether or not they want to get more of “Descendants” on the air. This project had the feeling of a high-concept hit really from the beginning, given that it was the classic story of whether or not someone is destined to repeat the mistakes of those who came before them. The one twist that was thrown into the system this time around is these particular people are the children of some of the most popular Disney villains in history.
So for the TV movie directed by Kenny Ortega to draw 6.6 million viewers is not a surprise at all. This is the sort of thing that could be a whole franchise for them in the future, and we could see everything from more movies to potential TV shows. Disney has been very great over the years when it comes to having successful movies; just look at “Teen Beach” earlier this summer or even “Camp Rock” from a few years back, when the Jonas Brothers were really at their heyday.
Disney Channel still has plenty of time to figure out what the future holds here, at least in relative terms. If they want the same cast on board, they’ll probably have to figure things out over the next few months.
“Descendants” is hardly the first project from the Disney machine using popular characters on TV; we feel like some of the twists and turns on popular characters helped “Once Upon a Time” become a huge hit on ABC many years back.
