‘The Muppets’ video: Watch the full ABC presentation now!
Over the past few weeks, ABC has been promoting their upcoming version of “The Muppets” at some various promotional spots and even San Diego Comic-Con. They also sent this in screener form to critics a while back. This is the same ten-plus minutes that was given to the network before they decided whether or not to greenlight the series.
Today, ABC has thankfully decided to put this online for everyone to see, and we couldn’t be happier for it. This is so funny from start to finish, and captures everything that we love about the original “Muppet Show” and the movies, but in a completely new way. for one, getting to see the day-to-day lives of these characters is a unique spin, including Kermit being stuck in traffic, Fozzy Bear being in a romantic relationship with a human, and Miss Piggy deciding that midway through production on a project she wants to change something dramatically on her character.
The idea for the show is simple: It’s basically about the Muppets making a show, and with the mock documentary-style footage a la “The Office” or “Parks and Recreation,” you can see how certain characters feel about certain situations.
Ultimately, there is so much to like here. It’s “The Muppets” precisely as we envision them in 2015, and while it is not a pilot per se, it is the favorite new thing that we’ve seen across any of the major networks so far for the fall. This doesn’t guarantee that the show itself will be a huge hit, but typically comedies take a few episodes before starting to get truly funny. This one has an advantage because you already know the characters, but it remarkable how well it works.
We’ll have more news on “The Muppets” as it starts to come out, but for now head over here to get some other TV news on all we cover via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: ABC.)
