‘Masters of Sex’ season 3, episode 2 preview: Bill, Virginia take on latest shocker

There were a variety of ways in which the third-season premiere of “Masters of Sex” proved to be a surprise. For one, you had the massive time jump, and you’ve got Virginia’s oldest children in a very different place than we last saw them. In some ways, this was particularly jarring, but given that Bill and Virginia spent many years researching for their sex study, clearly the show wanted to leap forward to when there would be some more action.

Then, the news broke that Virginia was pregnant, and the sneak peek below is really all about this very thing. Virginia tries to reassure Bill that this is not going to impact the research, and makes it clear that this happened with George when the two had a moment one night. They were both distraught by Henry’s decision to enlist, and this is how they ended up in this position.

The one thing that Virginia makes clear here is very simple: While she is pregnant, that is not necessarily a sign that she is going to actually have the child. Seeing her make this decision will most likely be a very difficult, powerful storyline for the show this year, and it should give Lizzy Caplan in particular some phenomenal material.

While we wish we could say to look at the history books for some sort of inspiration here, we know that the show does not always follow history verbatim. Just look at the disclaimer at the end of last week’s episode as some evidence of that.
