2015 Tony Awards: Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming joke around to begin show

Tony Awards -The 2015 Tony Awards opened up Sunday night with a mixture of comedy and musical performances, and it was very clear almost from the get-go that producers really wanted to play up the talents of their two hosts in Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth. Both have Broadway history, are extremely talented singers, and also have some other career highlights in other mediums. Therefore, they are the right heir apparents for a show that has really been dominated as of late by Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris.

We’re not going to shay that their opening to the show smashed any barriers or genuinely surprised us, except for just being solid entertainment. There were a few jokes made specifically at the expense of certain plays, but you could tell the show was being paved with largely a mainstream crowd in mind. Therefore, we had jokes about Helen Mirren, or how much money Harvey Weinstein has stored away somewhere. These are ultimately jokes that will appeal a whole lot to all viewers.

As for the joke that the majority of the Broadway viewing audience are in the gay demographic, we’ve heard that one countless times already.

Still, this was an admirable opening to the show. We always had some confidence in Kristin given that she has hosted such shows before, but Cumming also truly held his own, and the two worked together to give us what was in the end in a pretty strong start to what will be a long show all around.
