ESPN defends giving Caitlyn Jenner Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPYs

Caitlyn Jenner being unveiled to the world has been one of the biggest breaking news stories of the week, and when you consider that, it is hard to necessarily be surprised that there are already a variety of different opinions about many things connected to it. While some have applauded her bravery and determination, there are others who have gone so far as to petition the IOC to strip her of a gold medal won years ago as Bruce Jenner.

The IOC has already said that there will be no change to Jenner’s medal count, and now ESPN has commented on another controversy: Her being the recipient of this year’s Arthur Ashe Courage Awards at the ESPYs, which are being aired on ABC come Wednesday, July 15. As the network stated in a statement, they stand by their decision to give the trophy to someone from the athletic world who they feel is the right candidate at this given time:

“The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action. Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue … At all times, there are many worthy candidates. This year, we are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance.”

Specifically, there have been some out there who have felt like the award should have gone to veteran / fitness guru Noah Galloway, or inspirational basketball player Lauren Hill.
