Fall TV Preview: Does John Stamos, Fox have a hit on their hands with ‘Grandfathered’?
There’s no doubt to us that the past month has been crazy for John Stamos. Sure, you’ve seen all of the headlines as of late about the revival of “Full House” on Netflix (entitled “Fuller House”), but he also has a new comedy arriving on Fox this fall in “Grandfathered.” It’s a show with a pretty simple premise: He plays an extremely successful restaurant owner who seems to have everything together, only to discover all of a sudden that he has both a son and a granddaughter that he never knew about. Yet, there is potential for a whole lot of comedy in here, as well!
Below, we’ll give you a taste of what we think is working already about this show, but also at the same time a few little things that can be tweaked in order to make “Grandfathered” into something that all generations will enjoy.
What works – Stamos first and foremost. He’s the perfect person to play this part, since he has some of that natural charm and can really play the successful guy really well. Therefore, what’s fun about that is coming up with a thing or two that can still somehow shake him to his core. After watching this trailer, it feels pretty easy to figure out just what these things are: Family, and a lot of it really fast.
Sometimes, we also worry about a comedy really having enough of a premise that it will burn out quickly after the pilot. With a great cast that includes fellow sitcom veteran Josh Peck, you’ve got the talent that almost any situation could end up being very funny.
What doesn’t – Sure, the generational family comedy has been done many times before, and we wonder if the premise will not be that exciting to young people. Also, you fall into the trap potentially of Stamos having to change up his character too quickly due to his surprising circumstances. Let’s keep that evolution a slow build, shall we?
Overall verdict – This has the potentially to be a very funny entry into Fox’s fall lineup. Stamos has always been fantastic, but in a role that allows him to make a little bit of fun of himself, this could be one of the better shows we’ve seen him be a part of in quite some time.
