Critics’ Choice TV Awards 2015: Adam Driver, Tituss Burgess, T.J. Miller lead Supporting Actor in a Comedy
There are a few acting fields in the upcoming Critics’ Choice TV Awards (airing on May 31) that we consider to be incredible easy to call. However, the Supporting Actor in a Comedy field is not one of them. This one is unpredictable, fun, and shoved with all sorts of possible twists and turns. We like every single person in the field, and there are so many different directions that we could see the critics take in voting.
As we’ve been doing all week, take a look at some of our quick thoughts on the field below, including our current projections for who will win … and also who should.
The nominees
Adam Driver, “Girls” (HBO)
Cameron Monaghan, “Shameless” (Showtime)
Jaime Camil, “Jane the Virgin” (The CW)
T.J. Miller, “Silicon Valley”
Tituss Burgess, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (Netflix)
Tony Hale, “Veep” (HBO)
Who should win – The funny thing here is that we feel like Monaghan is even better in “Gotham” than “Shameless,” but he didn’t get a guest nod there. We also love “Silicon Valley” and just about everyone in it; we wouldn’t mind seeing Kumail Nanjiani and Zach Woods also in this category. Our pick here is going to be Burgess, mostly because it’s so hard to imagine anyone else in his role and that he has brought new life into the down-and-out mooching artist stereotype that has existed on so many shows before. He finds a way to make it feel new.
Who will win – This is a tough one to call. The “Jane the Virgin” love is real, but Gina Rodriguez is probably going to take a whole lot of attention for her role as the title character. Meanwhile, we feel like underdogs like T.J., Tituss, and Cameron will probably all cancel each other out. Picking Tony Hale to win may seem somewhat boring, but he is such a known commodity, critics love “Veep,” and his humility and spirit continue to make him a favorite for critics and fans alike. It is easy to like Driver and he has extra star power given his upcoming “Star Wars” season, but we preferred earlier seasons for his character.
