‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ season 1, episode 5 review: Foggy and Karen have their first date
The last episode of “Marvel’s Daredevil” gave us a deeper look into the big villain of the season: Wilson Fisk. He is a scary man and isn’t afraid to deal out some fairly harsh punishments, but there’s another side to him that we find even more intriguing. He is lonely, sad and a little bit lost when it comes to everything outside of the crime world. We saw him try to start a relationship up with a woman named Vanessa, but after their date was over run by mobsters, she is pulling away from him. Can he win her back?
Now that the mob knows who Claire is, Matt has asked her to stay with him, at least until he can figure out what to do next, and she agrees. They share their first kiss and it’s everything that we hoped it would be. Unfortunately, things don’t seem to be going all that well by the end of the episode where she says she can’t fall in love with a man that enjoys hurting people and he agrees that she shouldn’t love him. Claire tells Matt about Vladimir, saying that he’s the person that he should be targeting, but it looks like he will be targeting Daredevil as well after the body of his brother turns up and all signs point to him as the killer (a move orchestrated by Fisk).
When Wilson explains to the other heads of their respective mobs that he’s killed Vladimir’s brother over a personal matter (and framing Daredevil), they are unhappy that they were not consulted. After explaining that they will keep Vladimir in the dark for a little while longer to continue with business and that the 5 shares will now be 4 bigger shares, everyone agrees to the plan. Vladimir gets some bad information that leads him to believe that Fisk and Daredevil are working together and now he’s out for revenge against Fisk.
Wilson gets a second chance at Vanessa as she agrees to go to dinner with him again and this time he is completely open about who he is and what he does and she stays this time. When Vladimir finds out that Fisk is having dinner with Vanessa, he heads over there to settle the score for his brother. Fisk is one step ahead of Vladimir and blows up his whole operation and all of his men – except for Vladimir who is paid a visit by Daredevil. Unfortunately for Matt the cops show up and he’s about to be placed under arrest.
Karen and Foggy (can we just say again how much we love these two and want to see them together?) are working together on a case for the firm and are going up against the firm Foggy interned at. Not only that, but the woman heading the other side is someone that dated Foggy at one point and mentions that he has commitment issues to Karen. When they find themselves inadvertently on a candle lit dinner date after helping a client, we have to say we couldn’t have been happier. Unfortunately Karen talks a little too much about Matt and later makes the date awkward by asking Foggy to touch her face to see her as a blind person would.
We also get another level to Wilson as he feels that he is doing the work of a vigilante, cleaning up his city by working with the different mobs to end it all… or at least that’s what he’s telling Vanessa. We know we’ve already said this in our last article, but Wilson Fisk might be the best villain on TV in the superhero world right now and we could watch a whole series about him. Episode grade: A-
