‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ season 1, episode 2 review: Are Karen and Foggy the new Jim and Pam?
The season premiere of “Marvel’s Daredevil” really kicked things off as Netflix reminded us of how cool the character of Daredevil really is (and we try to forget the disaster that was Ben Affleck). It set things up for fans as we saw Matt and Foggy set up their law office just a few hours after passing their bar exam and bringing on Karen to help out as their office administrator. We also had a chance to see Daredevil in action and we were pleased to see that there was a lot of work that went into the fight sequences and how amazing they looked. We couldn’t wait to see episode 2 and we know you couldn’t either so let’s take a look at what happens next in their story.
We know that in the comics Karen Page is the love interest of Daredevil, but we find the chemistry between her and Foggy to be so much stronger. Watching their back and forth ribbing of each other reminds us of the very early stages of Jim and Pam’s relationship on “The Office”. The chemistry gets even stronger between them when they go bar hopping on their non-date as a way of Karen avoiding going home to her apartment where she still hasn’t been able to get the blood out of her carpet.
What is equally interesting to us is that the chemistry between Matt and Claire (the woman that found him bleeding in a dumpster) is also off the charts. After rescuing Matt and tending to his injuries in her apartment, he explains that he is trying to help a boy who was kidnapped by the Russian mob for human trafficking, but quickly learned that it was a trap to try and kill him because he’s been making their lives difficult. The last 2 minutes of the show with Daredevil beating up all of those Russian mobsters was not only incredible, but also had an air of realism to it as we saw mobsters getting back up again after being put down and Daredevil getting progressively more tired as the fight went on.
When we take a look back into Matt’s past, we see his father being offered the fight of a life time, but he’s been told to take a fall in the fifth round and the incentive is that he will make a ton of money. After hearing how much Matt believes in him, he decides to place a bet with a bookie on himself betting every last dollar he has to win it and asking that the money be transferred as soon as the fight is done into an account for his son. He wins the fight and has his moment in the sun right before getting shot for betraying the mob.
We also want to take a moment to talk about Skylar Gaertner who plays the young Matt Murdock. It’s not always easy to find good child actors, but Gaertner is really fantastic. This is an incredibly hard and heartbreaking role to play: Watching his father beaten up night after night, learning that his father is taking the fall during fights to make money for mobsters, and losing his eye sight at such a young age. Episode grade: A-
