‘iZombie’ episode 7 preview: A new side in ‘Maternal Liv’
Through the first six episodes of this season, “iZombie” has worked to establish a consistent tone and feel for itself. We’re not going to say that it has figured this out entirely just yet, but we will give them credit for trying to make some progress. It’s not reaching its potential just yet, but there is still time for it to get there.
Will “Maternal Liv” be an episode that starts to bring out more of what the show is capable of? We certainly hope so. While there may not be too much known about the side stories in this episode, the synopsis below gives you a great sense as to what Rose McIver’s character will be up to. It’s certainly an episode that could contain some humor:
“A group of teens get a scare when a disheveled young pregnant woman approaches them muttering for help. Unfortunately, the woman doesn’t survive but her baby does. Liv (Rose McIver) and Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) begin questioning suspects in her murder, and after consuming the victim’s brain, a fierce maternal instinct kicks in for Liv. Meanwhile, Major (Robert Buckley) makes a shocking discovery.”
To us, one of the struggles for the show is always going to be trying to cultivate a perfect balance between a pair of different forces. You have to make the victims and their stories somewhat serious to ensure that they really matter and that we care about the case of the week. Otherwise, the show has no heart. However, at the same time you don’t want this to become melodramatic in a terrible way, and you want to keep that humor that is at the center of it all every time Liv eats a brain, gains a new attribute and then tries to figure out how to deal with it.
