‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 3 preview (PBS): Early expectations and tough times

Call the Midwife -

When the next new episode of “Call the Midwife” airs on the BBC Sunday night, you are once again going to be forced to see characters in a more than traumatizing place. We’ve seen at times the happy, cheery side of Poplar, but the weeks ahead are going to descend into a certain degree of darkness. There is no idealized Britain on this show; both disease and accusations run rampant, and society is going to make their feelings clear on a social issue still important today.

As always with these PBS previews, we present you with four teases for Sunday night’s episode! None are too spoilery, but should give you an idea as to some general themes.

1. The role of sexuality in this era is further explored through a man named Tony. This is a story that was in some ways already touched on with Patsy in the second episode, but this is a much more explicit recount of how society reacts to a homosexual relationship in this time.

2. How a few characters react to this particular story in the episode may surprise you. What you have to remember here is that this is a different time, and while society may have progressed quite a bit in the decades since the setting of another show in “Downton Abbey,” it has not moved so quickly as to change things radically.

3. Also, be prepare for a story about a sickly side of Poplar, and a pregnant woman who finds herself with nowhere else to go.

4. You have already met Phyllis on the series, but as she will learn further on this episode, adjusting to a new place like Nonnatus House will not be easy … especially when she has her own specific plan for how many things should be run.
