‘The Muppets’ could become series at ABC (with a ‘Big Bang Theory’ connection)
Love the Muppets? We’re right there with you. Many of the classic films remain to us necessary viewing, and “Muppet Christmas Carol” may actually be our favorite movie of all time.
So when you consider all of this, you really cannot be too shocked to learn that ABC wants a piece of that magic, given that Disney has now owned the characters for more ten ten years. Per Deadline, the network has ordered a presentation for a series based on many of these popular characters, with the setting being behind the scenes at a late-night talk show. There’s already a significant comedy pedigree behind the scenes as Bill Prady of “The Big Bang Theory” is set to executive-produce alongside “Anger Management” alum Bob Kushell. Prady’s career in entertainment in many ways started working with the Jim Henson brand, and has written many projects and was even a part of a similar presentation almost a decade ago. Kushell would be the primary showrunner in the event the project is picked up.
With Prady on board, we’re not so worried about the Muppets coming out the other side not looking or acting like they should. If we are concerned about any one thing right now, it would strictly be finding the right place for them to succeed. You have to make the show earnest enough so that the characters remain timeless and appeal to children, while at the same time you also need it to be edgy enough to convince adults without children to still watch. Basically, they need to do what Jason Segel managed to for his recent Muppets feature film.
Let it be known that we’re rooting for this so much. Bonus points if the Great Gonzo is a major character.
