‘Mom,’ ‘Mike & Molly’ renewed for additional seasons by CBS

While “Mike & Molly” has never been the belle of the ball over at CBS, it is clearly turning into the new “Rules of Engagement,” the under-the-radar show that continues to draw decent ratings and come back year after year. We’re continually confused about how they don’t take advantage more of Melissa McCarthy’s star power.

Anyway, both this show and “Mom” have each been seemingly renewed by the network for another season. While they have not confirmed the news as of now, you can go ahead and write both of these shows in for another go-around. This is hardly much of a surprise when you think about it. “Mom” is emerging as more and more of a big hit for the network, which has struggled to find another true “hit” comedy to add to their lineup. Plus, you have Emmy-winner Allison Janney on board. Meanwhile, “Mike & Molly” is the perfect bench player for the network. They can leave it off the fall schedule, and then plug it in almost anywhere to get some decent numbers.

We do wonder a little more about its long-term future, given that most TV actors sign contracts that run only for six years upon joining the show and this cast could all decide to go somewhere else. However, it’s probably a little silly to speculate that far into the future.

Elsewhere in the cBS comedy landscape, “2 Broke Girls” is almost certainly going to be back, and “The Big Bang Theory” is renewed through season 10. Meanwhile, we’re still hopeful that “The Odd Couple” will get another season based on early ratings.
