Ratings: ‘American Crime’ starts okay; ‘The Blacklist’ low; ‘The Odd Couple’ impresses

As a whole, there are a few interesting stories to take away from the ratings for Thursday night’s TV lineup.

Let’s begin here with the series premiere of “American Crime,” which scored a decent 2.0 in the 18-49 demographic for its premiere. This is not anywhere near what “How to Get Away with Murder” received back in the fall, but we did not expect it to be anywhere near as popular. This show is even darker than anything that Shonda Rhimes has on the air, and it plays almost like one of those true-crime specials that air on primetime TV Friday nights. We anticipate a slight drop in its ratings next week, and we’ll saw for the time being that it is a toss-up we see any more of this show in one way or another moving forward.

Meanwhile, let’s talk some good news: “The Odd Couple” is doing rather well. Sure, it lost a good chunk of its “Big Bang Theory” lead-in with a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic. (The Jim Parsons comedy led the night with a 4.7.) However, this is better than many other shows a few weeks into their season have fared with help from the sitcom. This is a show we feel is going to be very much a contender for a renewal, especially since CBS is hurting right now in the comedy department. Other than “The Big Bang Theory,” “Mom,” and to a certain extent “2 Broke Girls,” what else is there? “Mike & Molly” exists, but they never seem that keen to keep it judging by its erratic scheduling.

Now, we turn to “The Blacklist,” which continues to suffer by the insane decision by NBC to air the show on Thursdays. Its 1.7 rating is a tie for its series low. Let’s propose a quick solution, shall we? Why don’t you move “The Night Shift” to Thursdays, and put “The Blacklist” back in its original timeslot.
