‘The Voice UK’ preview: Susan Lovejoy sings ‘MacArthur Park’
We have never held any punches when it comes to “MacArthur Park”: This is one of the most horrendous songs ever written in our book. Who cares about leaving a cake out in the rain? We know that there are metaphors and other meanings to it, but for some reason, the visuals to us just don’t translate into lyrics. It’s almost better as a poem, and maybe it should have been left there.
Well, in the preview for Saturday’s “The Voice UK” below, you can see contestant Susan Lovejoy performing this song in front of the coaches, wearing what may be the greatest showcase of British pride ever on the show. Here’s what we don’t get about the outfit: Obviously, this is a fashion choice designed to stand out … but the only way that the coaches are going to see is either after they turn around, or after the performance. It’s not going to help her that she’s so pro-Britain!
We’re not going to say that this performance is perfect, but the thing about this show is that they are not deliberately courting people who lack singing ability. This is not “The X Factor.” Susan is decent, but we feel like it’s unlikely that she will make it through to the next round. Typically, the BBC places people in the promos who are going to get a chair or two, but we feel like she is here thanks to the spectacle of her outfit.
We’ll have a full review of this episode tomorrow night, so come back then to see that.
