Grammys 2015: Pharrell, Hans Zimmer team for dramatic ‘Happy’
You have to give Pharrell a little bit of credit for what he tried to bust out at the 2015 Grammy Awards Sunday night. When you look at the songs that some people decided to perform, he definitely took one of the biggest risks that we’ve seen with his take on “Happy.” After all, he decided to create a moody introduction to it, and really only sang the full chorus on one occasion. Certainly unusual, given that this catchy hook is really why this song became such a big hit in the first place.
If we’re being totally honest, the introduction did not work perfectly. The idea of “Happy” with this sort of minor key was strange, especially when you had Pharrell speaking out the lyrics of the song very slowly. It was almost a reminder that ultimately, some of the lyrics of this song are a little bit cheesy, even if we decide to accept them for the most part, anyway.
Regardless of our take on the earlier part of this performance, things really started to get going once Pharrell made the entire stage into his domain, and created a heck of an awesome party out of the place. The second half of this was close to sublime, and further proof of why we are so happy that he has come back of sorts the past few years after spending a while under the radar. Also, a shout-out to the piano solo! You definitely don’t see that often.
