‘The Legend of Zelda’ could become Netflix series

We come to you today reporting a story with two very different reactions, but before we really start to get into that. Let’s start here with the facts. According to the Wall Street Journal, Netflix is considering launching a series based off of Nintendo’s long-running franchise “The Legend of Zelda,” with it being described almost as a “family” version of “Game of Thrones.” This is still in the early stages of development, and it is not entirely clear if something will actually come out of this.

As a lifelong Nintendo fan and also someone who counts “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” as one of their all-time favorite games, we love the idea of this. Netflix is the sort of company that could do a beautiful version of this, and think about how few adventure epics there are right now that children under the age of 13 can really enjoy with their families. The streaming service has become a go-to destination for many families, and it therefore is something to be considered.

However, you also have to think about this in a very different way, as well. “The Legend of Zelda” was a cartoon at one point, and while campy fun, we cannot exactly say that it was “Batman: The Animated Series” or even the “Mario Bros.” cartoon also featured in the famed “Super Show” that aired so many years ago. One of the issues is that in the games, the main character Link never really speaks other than a few grunts and yells. Everyone else around him does, but that is it. The game’s somewhat old-school in that way.

Also? That “Super Mario Bros.” live-action movie was an abomination. Video-game adaptations don’t always work, and we’d actually much prefer a Netflix series based off of “Mass Effect,” “Dragon Age,” or even another Nintendo property in “Fire Emblem.”
