‘Downton Abbey’ season 6 debate: Should we see another wedding?

We should start this particular “Downton Abbey” story out with a pretty major warning, given that we are right in the middle of the show airing in America: Stop reading now if you want to avoid any and all spoilers!

Still with us? Then let’s dive into the question of weddings. Going into season 5, we thought very clearly that if we were speaking about a big ceremony when it comes to this show, it was going to throw the characters of Lady Mary and Anthony Gillingham front and center. However, that turned out to not be the case, and it was instead none other than Mr. Carson and Ms. Hughes who seem set to walk down the aisle! These are two who have had an extraordinary friendship, and they were never ones to be overly affectionate.

Still, the proposal scene has to be the greatest one in the history of the show, and that has us amped up for what the show wants to do next … if there is any interest in showing off a wedding scene at all. We’re not sure if there is.

The clear advantage to having a wedding between these two? It would be a rare moment of love and affection captured on the screen, and we’d love to contrast this with some of the more lavish weddings that this show has put on. These are two very practical people who come from a very different walk of life than Lady Mary or Lady Rose.

If there is a disadvantage, it is mostly that we’re not sure Carson would even allow so much focus to be put upon him. You have to find a way to make it happen that is still very much within his character.
