‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Steven Moffat on ratings for Peter Capaldi’s season
Were the ratings were in for “Doctor Who” throughout the season, they were a little bit lower at times than when Matt Smith was the Doctor. Was this really a sign of any genuine concern, though? We would argue not so much for a variety of different reasons.
First of all, the reason why you should not be worried about the series is that the figures are still very good, and when you have a show with this popular a following all around the world, there is way too much support to ignore.
Steven Moffat ultimately seems to agree with that and then some. While speaking per the Radio Times at a recent summit, the showrunner cited the slight dips mostly to the rise of recording devices in the UK, people watching via the internet, and some other means:
“Indisputably, without doubt, exactly the same number of people watch Doctor Who now as they ever did. There is no drop off in the ratings but the way people watch it has changed. They watch it on catch-up to a far higher degree.”
We do agree with him here, ultimately, and television is starting to become more and more like music around a decade or so when there started to be so many changes to the way in which people bought albums. People try to snag content via other, less-expensive means, and sometimes it works to the show’s detriment.
Luckily, “Doctor Who” needs not to worry about a decrease in live viewers versus a DVR. After all, they don’t have commercials breaks.
