DVR ratings: ‘Red Band Society,’ ‘Agents of SHIELD,’ ‘Vampire Diaries’ post big gains

We don’t necessarily check in with DVR ratings every week, but there is quite a bit that we can take from these much of the time. If a show is on the bubble of cancellation, this can be the sort of thing that either saves it, or sends it ultimately into the dustbin.

The following DVR numbers come courtesy of TVbythenumbers, and we’re focusing mostly on shows that really need the added viewership from recordings, and also those that added a significant amount of viewers 18-49 after the fact.

“Red Band Society” increases 89% (from a 0.9 to a 1.7 rating in the demo) – This is a huge increase, and this is not something a network show would have received years ago. Still, it may not be enough to save the show, despite its devoted following. Fox did order extra scripts, but the series ultimately needs a little better live numbers. Next to “Gracepoint,” it is the lowest-rated hour-long scripted show on the network. Still, Fox is doing pretty terribly right now, so that may help it.

“The Vampire Diaries” increases 88% (from a 0.8 to a 1.5) – To be fair, we don’t think this show is going anywhere, but this huge increase is important in showing that this show is still a huge one for The CW; it’s just not getting the same live viewers anymore.

“Agents of SHIELD” increases 75% (from a 1.6 to a 2.8) – This may be more significant than the other two. We don’t feel like ABC wants to cancel the show, which has become a better product in the past year and has a huge license behind it. It just needs to stop the bleeding.

“Reign” increases 75% (from a 0.4 to a 0.7) – This is a lot like “Red Band Society.” The numbers mark a nice improvement, but it is still losing half of its lead-in, and is at present the lowest-rated Monday-Thursday show on The CW’s lineup.
