‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6 spoilers: Trouble ahead for Caroline, Stefan

Over the past year, there is no question that Caroline and Stefan on “The Vampire Diaries” have developed quite the following, especially given the fact that the two have not even been in a relationship. As a matter of fact, this may be one of the real reasons why they are so popular in the first place. We imagine at this point, it must feel like old news to see a pair of characters who jump almost immediately into the sack after a short period of time.

This relationship is therefore somewhat refreshing … but is it really a relationship, or just a friendship that one wants to become something more? This is a question that many have wondered all summer long, and executive producer Caroline Dries seems to answer that in a chat with TVLine:

“She’s going to realize it’s a little more one-sided than she was hoping, and there’s going to be some fallout from that … But just because one character doesn’t like another character, that doesn’t mean it’s not a fascinating love story.”

Are we somewhat disappointed about this? Sure, but we also understand the value of having a real friendship between a male and female character on a TV show. After all, just look at how many time that this has actually happened, and the answer is “not many.” There is a certain connection that comes from this, and sometimes hooking a pair up can change that relationship dramatically, and take away some of the spark and whimsy of it.
